How to Mesure Window for Woven Wood Shades

mesure window for woven wood shades

Measuring for woven wood shades involves a few simple steps to ensure a proper fit. Here’s a guide to help you measure your windows accurately:

1. Gather Your Tools

You’ll need a metal tape measure(avoid cloth ones as they may stretch), pencil, and paper to record your measurements.

TheShireShades offers a Measurement Chart for your convenience. Simply download it and fill in your measurements for accuracy.

2. Decide Inside or Outside Mount

Determine whether you want to mount the shades inside the window frame or outside on the wall or trim.

Inside Mount:

For a neat, integrated appearance, choose an inside mount—the most popular option. Remember, your window frame must have enough depth to accommodate the Required Minimum Depth for your chosen window treatment. It’s a common mistake not to consider this depth, which determines the type of window treatment your window can accommodate with an inside mount and how it will look when installed.

TheShireShades Standard Mounting Position Depth
Shades Style Standard Mount Depth
Roman Shades 5 cm
Double-layer (with Movable Liner)  Roman Shades 7 cm
Continuous Cord Loop Roman Shades 5 cm
Continuous Cord Loop Double-layer Roman Shades 10 cm
Cordless Roman Shades 5 cm
Cordless Double-layer Roman Shades 10 cm
Motorized Roman Shades 10-20 cm

Outside Mount:

Opt for an outside mount for a larger window appearance and better light control. This choice is typically made when an inside mount isn’t possible due to insufficient depth in the window frame for the selected window treatment.

3. Inside Mount Measurement

Width: Measure the width of the window opening to the nearest 1/8 inch at the top, middle, and bottom. Record the narrowest measurement.

The narrowest measurement = your width

Height: Measure the height from the top inside edge of the window frame to the sill to the nearest 1/8 inch at the left, middle, and right sides. Record the longest measurement.

The longest measurement = your height

Depth: Measure the inside depth to the nearest 1/8 inch at the top of the window frame. Be sure to consider any Window Obstacles.

The shortest measurement = your depth.

Measuring Tips: Don’t take deductions from your measurements. With Inside Mount, we’ll make adjustments to ensure a perfect fit.

4. Outside Mount Measurement

Width: Measure the width of the area you want to cover, including any overlap onto the wall or trim. Decide how much overlap you want, typically 1-3 inches on each side, and add this to your width measurement.

Height: Measure the height from where you’ll install the top of the shade to where you want it to end. This can be the bottom of the window sill or lower for longer shades. Add extra length if needed for the mounting brackets or any desired overlap at the bottom.

Measuring Tips: For Outside Mount installed outside of the window trim, you might require extension brackets or spacer blocks to accommodate the trim thickness.

  • All measurements should be rounded to the nearest 1/8 inch.
  • Measure each window – even ones that seem identical.
  • Measure the windows, not the old shades and blinds.

5. Considerations

Depth: For inside mount, measure the depth of your window frame to ensure it can accommodate the shade hardware.

Consider window obstacles, which refer to anything that might disrupt the functionality or hanging of a window treatment, such as double-hung windows and hardware. These obstacles should be considered when measuring depth.

Overlap: Consider how much overlap you want for light control and privacy. This is particularly important for outside mounts.

6. Double-Check

Ensure all measurements are accurate by measuring twice before ordering your shades.

7. Consult Manufacturer Guidelines

Some manufacturers may have specific instructions or recommendations for measuring their particular style of woven wood shades, so be sure to check any provided guidelines.
